Open (Slash) Burning Information

Controlled burning. Burning to meet specific land management objectives, such as to reduce flammable fuels, restore ecosystem health, recycle nutrients, or prepare an area for new trees or vegetation, shall be allowed under the following conditions:

· A VALID PERMIT HAS BEEN ISSUED.

· The fire shall be constantly attended to by a responsible adult.

· The fire shall be extinguished and cool to the touch before leaving the site unattended.

Within the approved burn site, the fire shall have a total fuel area of 8 feet (2.4384 m) or less in diameter and 4 feet (1.2192 m) or less in height.
One of the following shall be available for immediate utilization:

· A portable fire extinguisher with a minimum 2A-10B:C rating.

· A 5-gallon container filled with water.

· A charged garden hose is available for immediate utilization.

· The approved burn area shall be at least 50 feet (15.24 m) from any flammable or combustible material and/or structure.

Controlled Burning is not allowed when the fire danger is HIGH, VERY HIGH, or EXTREME, during a Red Flag Warning or Fire Weather Advisory, or when there are fire restrictions in place by the State, County, or Town.
You may only burn during daylight hours.
You must contact Summit 911 Center before burning at (970) 668-8600.

· Slash burning is not allowed from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

BONFIRES ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE FIRE DISTRICT WITHOUT A SPECIAL PERMIT APPLICATION.
