Mary Kay has called Breckenridge her home for the last 27 years.  She moved to Colorado from Detroit, Michigan after graduate school.  Her career in Summit County began in 1997 at Summit School District as a Special Education Teacher and girl’s basketball coach at Summit High.  Through her 26 years with the District she worked at 6 of the 9 schools throughout the county.  She started as a Special Education teacher, then moved to Special Education Director, and then retired in the position of Chief Academic Officer.  She also served as interim Superintendent for a short time.  During her tenure she led many initiatives at the district including the creation of their current strategic plan and graduate profile, adoption of many curriculums, and the transition of the district to be their own administrative unit.

During her educational career she sat on many local boards including Early Childhood Options, and worked with many state level committees including developing the new state guidelines for graduation. She also was a member of the state Special Education Directors’ leadership team run by the Colorado Department of Education. In 2009 she was invited to Washington DC to testify in front of the House education subcommittee for the current Colorado Governor Jared Polis, for the Learn Act.

Mary Kay met her husband Bobby in Breckenridge and they have been married for the past 15 years.  In their retirement Mary Kay continues to support education by reviewing school improvement plans for the Colorado Department of Education and supporting the work of the Summit Education Foundation.  Bobby has continued to coach the High School hockey team so there are many hours spent at ice rinks across the state supporting the team.  In the summer they can both be found often at the Breckenridge Golf Course.  Retirement has offered her more opportunity to connect with the outdoor activities that brought her to Breckenridge in the first  place and the special community that keeps them here.
