Press Release

Shekel Lane Wildland Fire

Friday, October 12, 2007 - Breckenridge, CO

At approximately 2:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Red, White & Blue firefighters were called to a fire in Silver Shekel.

When crews arrived at 0271 Shekel Lane, they found a small wildland fire in the backyard of the unoccupied residence. A nearby resident noticed smoke and flames and called 9-1-1.

The fire was quickly extinguished before extending beyond the 20’ by 20’ area it had already burned. It appeared to have started in or near an outside makeshift structure and spread to the surrounding area and trees.

"Although the summer is over and we are in a ‘moderate’ fire danger, residents should still be aware that we still have a significant risk of wildland fires in our area," said Chief Gary Green. "We’ve had low moisture, a dry ground cover and afternoon winds-all factors that concern us," he said.

"We want to remind everyone to please remain diligent with their safety practices with any recreational or open burn fires," Green said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
