Red, White & Blue Responds to Small Fire at Lodge and Spa

Friday, June 15, 2007 - Breckenridge, CO

Thursday morning, Red White & Blue firefighters responded to a fire at the Lodge and Spa in Breckenridge.

When firefighters arrived at 112 Overlook Drive, all of the occupants had been evacuated and were outside of the building with the fire alarm activated.

Firefighters made their way to the laundry room, where they extinguished a small fire in a laundry bag. According to the manager at the Lodge and Spa, the laundry had been delivered Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. At approximately 3 a.m. the following morning, a front desk employee smelled an "unusual" smell but could not locate the source of the odor.

According to Fire Investigator Lt. Jay Nelson, a smoke detector activated approximately six feet from the source of the fire. Investigation determined the cause of the fire to be spontaneous heating caused by either residual massage oils in the sheets or a chemical used in the cleaning process of the sheets that may not have been fully washed out. The laundry is sent out of the Lodge and Spa to a local laundry for cleaning.

"We would like to commend the occupants as well as the staff at the Lodge and Spa for their quick response in recognizing the fire alarm and evacuating immediately," said Fire Chief Gary Green. "In a fire situation, we are concerned with life safety first and if this fire had been larger, that quick evacuation would have played a key role in the safety of the occupants," he said.

Damage was minimal and limited to the bag of sheets.
