Red, White & Blue Responds to Garage Roof

Wednesday, March 26, 2008 - Breckenridge, CO

At approximately 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, Red, White & Blue Fire District responded to a garage roof collapse at 697 Broken Lance Drive in Breckenridge.

When firefighters arrived on scene to the collapse, they also noticed a strong smell of gas. They immediately took safety precautions until they determined the source. Broken Lance Drive was temporarily closed to traffic, as was a portion of Tomahawk Drive. Investigating around the house and garage, firefighters located the natural gas shut off to the house and garage. The smell immediately dissipated.

Neighbors who called 9-1-1 said that they believe the house was unoccupied at the time of the incident. The owners, Donald and Beverly Dixon, who live in Kansas, verified that no one was staying at the house.

Investigation revealed that heavy snow load contributed to the roof collapse. Upon collapse, a natural gas line was severed inside of the garage. Because of the structural instability, firefighters were unable to enter the two-car garage to investigate further.

Red, White & Blue Fire wants to remind homeowners and renters to be aware of snow accumulation on the roofs of their homes and garages. Especially with heavy spring snow, the danger to persons and buildings is high. Please use extreme caution if you are going to clear snow off of your roof, for it may be very slippery and dangerous. Homeowners should consider contacting appropriate contractors to provide the service.
