Red, White & Blue Firefighters Respond to House Fire

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - Breckenridge, CO

At approximately 10:30 p.m. last night, Red, White & Blue Fire District was paged to a house fire.

When firefighters arrived on scene at 0027 Zepplin Way in Breckenridge, they noticed the back side of the house heavily involved in fire.

The caretaker for the 4200 square foot home smelled smoke and went to investigate her apartment, which is attached to the house. She called 9-1-1 after she realized the smoke was not coming from her apartment, and quickly evacuated.

Firefighters made a quick attack to the exterior of the house, knocking down the flames, and then began an interior attack to extinguish the rest of the fire.

"There was heavy fire involvement of the crawl space on the first floor," said Fire Marshal Jay Nelson. The three-story house was built in 1978 and did not have a monitored smoke detector or sprinkler system.

The house sustained heat and smoke damage to the second and third floors, while the structural members and the floor on the first level had the most significant fire damage.

The house is owned by Morton "Mickey" Zepplin of Denver. The house is used as a rental home. Approximately 60% of the homes in Red, White & Blue’s fire district are second homes.

"The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although it appears to be accidental at this time", said Nelson.
