Red, White & Blue Fire Assists Katrina Relief Efforts

Fire Departments from around the country are helping with the relief efforts in the Gulf States and Red, White & Blue Fire is no exception. Fund raising and sending firefighters to the area are just two of the ways assistance is being offered.

Lieutenant Firefighter and Hazardous Materials Technician, Kris Lasswell, along with Firefighter Paramedic, Steve Webster were one of a thousand two-person teams sent to the area to assist. After receiving their FEMA credentials and a one day training, our team was sent to South Carolina to help at one of the many camps housing the evacuees. They are also prepared to serve as emergency service personnel in case any further needs arise, such as Hurricane Ophelia.

Red, White & Blue has also been involved in a significant fund raising effort with a portion of the money being sent to Hurricane Katrina Relief Funds. Over the Labor Day weekend, firefighters were out collecting money and raised a total of $12,900. "It was a great display of generosity from everyone," said Lt. Mike Roll, Public Information Officer. "Over the three days we collected, people were emptying their pockets and thanking us for our efforts. We even had a resident of New Orleans who had evacuated before the storm hit come up and express his appreciation."

Red, White, & Blue is continuing to explore ways to assist. "We will continue to do what we can to help," explains Chief Gary Green. "At this time we have a 2-person team out there, with a list of others ready to go when they return. We will continue to provide help as long as there is a need."
