Ophir Mountain Fire Update, 100% Contained
Friday, October 14, 2005 - Farmers Korner, CO
Local and US Forest Service fire officials have declared the Ophir Mountain fire near Farmers Korner 100% contained. Up to 50 firefighters, 3 engines, and one water tender (a 1250 gallon water transport) worked diligently throughout the day to complete the containment. Weather was also a significant factor in helping get the fire under control so quickly. Cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity, as well as calm winds, helped firefighters with their efforts. They were able to have the fire fully contained at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night. The Ophir Mountain fire burned 16.14 acres total, approximately 75% of which are federal lands.
Approximately 30 federal firefighters will remain on scene to continue mop-up operations and monitor the fire, but all other personnel have been released from the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire officials are strongly urging people to stay out of the burn area. There are still quite a few standing dead trees in the burn area that have the potential to fall at any time.
