Holiday Safety Tips

Thursday, December 20, 2007 - Breckenridge, CO

With the holiday season upon us, Red, White & Blue Fire District would like to remind folks to enjoy the season safely. Each year, fires occurring during the holiday season claim the lives of over 400 people, injure 1,650 more and cause over $990 million in damage. Following are a few tips to keep in mind this season.

When selecting a tree, make sure you select a fresh tree whose needles should be green and hard to pull back from the branches and the trunk should be sticky to the touch. Do not place your tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks. Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times.

When decorating your Christmas tree, examine light strings before placing on your tree, discarding worn or frayed strings. Fasten the bulbs securely and point sockets down to avoid moisture build-up. Connect no more than three strands together and unplug light strand before replacing a bulb. All decorations should be non-flammable or flameretardant and placed away from heat vents.

If you use candles, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be easily knocked down. Never leave the house with candles burning. Do not go near a Christmas tree with an open flame-candles, lighters or matches.

By following these tips listed above, you can help ensure your safety and the safety of your family and friends this holiday season.
