HIGHLANDS-AREA PRESCRIBED BURNS SCHEDULED - Red, White and Blue Fire District to Burn Nine Piles

Tuesday, November 02, 2010 - Breckenridge, CO

The Red, White and Blue Fire District and the Town of Breckenridge continue their partnership to reduce the fuel load in and around the Upper Blue Valley. The next step in the fuel reduction is a prescribed burn project in the Highlands at Breckenridge subdivision, slated for sometime in November, depending on weather conditions.

Throughout the past four summers, the Town of Breckenridge has mitigated parts of their open space properties in the Highlands to create fuel breaks and reduce fuel loading. The slash from the nine piles will be burned over the course of the next month, weather permitting. Each large pile will burn into the night and smoke may be visible for several days after and as far away as Frisco.

The piles of material that will be burned consist of partially-whole trees and slash from removed logs. Large-pile burn permits have been issued from the State of Colorado, Red White and Blue Fire District and the Town of Breckenridge.

Every effort was made to recycle the wood, with no material brought to the landfill. The remaining product left on site will be burned. It is the goal of these large pile burns to create as much heat as possible within the pile to reduce particulates in the air.

SCAlert will be used as the primary means of communication for these burns, along with local radio notification. You can sign up for email/text notification for SCAlert at http://www.scalert.org.
