Heavy Snow Loads Create Hazard Area Around Buildings Town and Fire District Encourage Residents to Remain Vigilant
Friday, February 11, 2011 - Breckenridge, CO
The Town of Breckenridge and the Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District are encouraging residents and business owners to take extra safety measures around buildings due to the large amounts of snow received this winter.
Accumulated snow, while possibly being a hazard to the building itself, also could pose a risk to anyone standing underneath or around the structure. “Remaining aware of your surroundings is the best way to ensure your safety,” said Deputy Chief Jay Nelson. “Last week’s incident at Cowboys Stadium, where five people were injured by falling snow and ice, should serve as a reminder to all of us that we need to take extra precautions,” he said.
Residents, property managers and business owners are encouraged to be proactive by assessing the snow load on their roofs. “Areas that may need attention are roofs with snow build-up, especially for older pre 1990’s structures and lower-pitched slopes,” said Glen Morgan, Chief Building Official for the Town. “Below grade and grade-level bedroom windows should be cleared of snow to ensure they will open in an emergency. Exhaust and dryer vents, as well as gas meters, should also be cleared of snow accumulation to avoid a fire or explosion,” he said.
Take the following precautions to protect life and property:
Watch for falling snow and ice from roofs.
Don’t put untrained individuals on roofs to clear snow.
Contact a professional snow removal company.
Inspect roofs for leaks or structural deficiencies that may develop during the winter.
Clear snow and ice away from exhaust vents and gas meters.
Make certain gutters, drains and downspouts are clear of ice and debris.
