Firefighters Rescue Man Trapped Under Vehicle
Sunday, October 22, 2006 - Breckenridge, CO
At approximately 5:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon, Red, White & Blue firefighters responded to a man trapped under a pickup truck.
When firefighters arrived on scene at 350 SCR 708, they found an adult male trapped under a pickup truck he was trying to load onto a flatbed truck. Firefighters quickly assessed the scene and the trapped male and decided to call in another fire engine for assistance.
According to the victim, he had secured the truck on a winch and was underneath the pickup truck chaining the rear axle to the flatbed when the winch broke, trapping the man’s leg, and more specifically, his knee, under the right rear tire of the pickup. He lay under the truck for approximately 30 minutes before someone noticed and called
9-1-1.
Firefighters used come-alongs, which are basically hand-operated winches, to secure the front of the pickup truck to the flatbed, and then lifted the rear of the pickup truck approximately 2 feet with airbags to remove it from the victim’s knee. The victim was then transported via Summit County Ambulance to the hospital.
"This gentleman is very lucky he didn’t sustain extensive injuries," said Captain Kim Scott. "This was an unfortunate accident, but fortunately resulted in minor injuries," she said.
Breckenridge Police were on scene and provided assistance to the fire department.
