Fire Stopped at Skier’s Edge

Tuesday, March 13, 2007 - Breckenridge, CO

Red, White & Blue Fire District was called today at approximately 2:30 p.m. for the report of a fire at Skier’s Edge.

Upon arrival, firefighters quickly finished putting out the fire in the mechanical room that was initially extinguished by the property manager. The fire was called in by a contractor, who was excavating outside the building and had inadvertently pulled the propane gas line while excavating and was unaware of it. He left, and returned two hours later, seeing fire outside of the front of Skier’s Edge and called 911.

The propane gas leaked from the line into the mechanical room, which is approximately 10 feet from the line, and filled the room with gas. A spark, either from the boiler firing, or from an electrical source, ignited the gas, possibly causing a small explosion. The property manager used two fire extinguishers, and extinguished the fire on the outside of the building, and then, still standing outside, activated the extinguisher to the inside of the mechanical room.

"Skier’s Edge property owners and guests are very lucky that the manager used common sense to mitigate this fire," said Fire Investigator Jay Nelson. "Quick thinking on his part helped contain this fire until the fire department arrived," he said.

Since Red, White & Blue’s fire station, Station 7, is less than a mile away, initial response was immediate. "We have that fire station staffed 24/7, which helps us provide the same level of service throughout our District," said Captain Kim Scott.

Damage is estimated to be around $5000 and no evacuation was necessary.
