Early Morning Fire Engulfs Home

Friday, October 27, 2006 - Breckenridge, CO Highland Terrace Fire Pic 1

At approximately 4:10 a.m. Friday morning, the Red, White & Blue Fire District was called to a house fire at 215 Highland Terrace in Breckenridge.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they observed 20-30 foot flames coming out of the front of the three-story house. They quickly set up hose lines on either side of the house to protect exposures to adjacent homes and evacuated those homes.

They made an aggressive defensive attack, hitting the flames from the outside of the house and extinguished them. They then made entry into the house to check for fire extension behind the walls and in the ceiling. Hydraulic fans were set up to extract the smoke and heat from the house.

Residents next door at 213 Highland Terrace were awakened to an "orange glow", looked out of the window, saw the 20-30 foot flames and immediately called 9-1-1. They quickly dressed and exited the house.

11 firefighters in two engines, one ladder truck and the battalion chief car responded from Red, White & Blue; one engine from Lake Dillon Fire/Rescue with 4 firefighters responded as well as Summit County Ambulance and Breckenridge Police Department. No firefighter injuries were reported.

"We’re very fortunate that someone noticed the flames and called 9-1-1 immediately," said Battalion Chief Russ Austin. "We were able to protect families and two houses on either side of that house as well as stop the fire," he said.

The house, owned by the Partridge family from Wichita, KS, was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Investigators from Red, White & Blue and the Town of Breckenridge Police Department will be on scene to determine the cause, which, at this time, is still under investigation.
