Discovery Hill Fuel Break Burn Scheduled The Red, White and Blue Fire District and Town of Breckenridge have scheduled burns in Discovery Hill in order to protect sub-divisions from catastrophic wildfires
Wednesday, November 12, 2008 - Breckenridge, CO
The Red, White and Blue Fire District and the Town of Breckenridge partnered to create a fuel break above Discovery Hill in the Highlands Park Subdivision. The slash from the fuel break will be burned over the course of the next few months, weather permitting. Each large pile will burn into the night and smoke may be visible for several days after and as far way as Frisco.
The Town of Breckenridge and Red, White and Blue received a federally-funded Wildland Urban Interface grant this year with the goal of planning fuel breaks, reducing fuel loads around high-risk subdivisions and educating the public to help prevent and defend against wildfires in our changing forest. The Discovery Hill fuel break is the first in a series and is designed to give firefighters a foothold to defend against a catastrophic wildfire. The fuel break will be used as a model for future projects around the Upper Blue Valley.
The Discovery Hill fuel break is on Breckenridge’s Open Space land. The piles of material that will be burned consist of whole trees and none of the material has been removed from the site. Large-pile burn permits have been issued from the State of Colorado, Red White and Blue Fire and the Town of Breckenridge.
Any concerns can be directed to Matt Benedict, Wildland Coordinator, or Fire Marshal Jay Nelson at 970.453.2474.
